The landfill\u00a0is owned and operated by New England Waste Services of VT, Inc. (a subsidiary of\u00a0Casella Waste Systems, Inc.). The landfill manages approximately 75% of the waste generated by Vermonters, the remaining 25% goes to disposal facilities located in NH, NY and MA.\u00a0There was a second lined landfill facility located in Moretown, VT however, that facility closed in 2013 due to compliance issues.\u00a0The landfill\u00a0is a state-of-art, highly engineered and regulated facility. Gone are the days when there was a &#8220;dump&#8221; located in each town. Those dumps were not lined and the liquids from the waste would leach into and contaminate groundwater. For this reason, dumps were ordered to close\u00a0in the early 90&#8217;s. Newly constructed landfills are required to be double-lined with high density, low permeability , puncture-resistant\u00a0plastic to capture the liquid\u00a0 (known as Leachate) preventing it from contaminating soil and groundwater. The leachate is pumped off of the liner system and taken to wastewater treatment plants for treatment. Below is a cross section of modern landfill liner systems.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fairfaxrecycles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/landfilllinerdetail.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-489 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/fairfaxrecycles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/landfilllinerdetail-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"434\" height=\"434\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fairfaxrecycles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/landfilllinerdetail-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fairfaxrecycles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/landfilllinerdetail-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/fairfaxrecycles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/landfilllinerdetail-1024x1024.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 434px) 100vw, 434px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When landfills are constructed, they are built in segments referred to as &#8220;cells&#8221;.\u00a0 When waste is placed into a new cell, the first five feet layer of trash has to be free of sharp objects &#8211; this layer is called the &#8220;fluff layer&#8221;. The fluff layer is to prevent any large, rigid objects from damaging the liner system.<\/p>\n<p>When waste that is placed in the landfill decomposes, it produces landfill gas. The gas is collected through vertical and horizontal gas wells (pictured below) that are installed in the waste mass. Gas is\u00a0collected by applying a vacuum to the landfill and gas is delivered to the energy plant located next to the landfill. The plant turns the gas into a fuel powering 7,000 homes in Vermont, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fairfaxrecycles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Picture2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-481 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/fairfaxrecycles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Picture2-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fairfaxrecycles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Picture2-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/fairfaxrecycles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Picture2-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/fairfaxrecycles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Picture2-1024x1024.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The landfill is an important part of Vermont&#8217;s solid waste infrastructure. The facility provides a safe and environmentally responsible way for managing our waste. Without it, all of our waste would have to be transported to disposal alternatives in other states which would in turn would increase the cost of disposal for Vermonters and increase Vermont&#8217;s carbon footprint.\u00a0 We would also be at risk if other states decided not to accept Vermont&#8217;s waste.
